After five days on the run, the alleged shooter of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was arrested in a small city in Pennsylvania. Luigi Mangione has been charged with murder among other alleged crimes.
Here’s what we know about Mangione.
Mangione is from Maryland. He graduated valedictorian from Gilman School, which is an all-boys school in Baltimore. School Headmaster Henry P.A. Smyth said that the news that an alumnus was arrested for murder was “deeply disturbing.”
“This is deeply distressing news on top of an already awful situation. Our hearts go out to everyone affected,” Smyth wrote in an email to parents and the school community, CNN reported.
A former teacher, who did not want to be identified, told The Washington Post, that Mangione “was a good spirit. He was very bright, vivacious and full of life. ...I’m gut-punched because it just doesn’t fit the boy that I knew years ago.”
Mangione’s family released a statement shared by Del. Nino Mangione, a member of the Maryland House of Delegates and the alleged gunman’s cousin, that said they were devastated, the newspaper reported.
“Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest,” they said. “We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved.”
The Post called the family “prominent” in the Baltimore area, adding that they own WCBM-AM and Lorien Health Services among other businesses.
After Gilman School, Luigi Mangione attended the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia where he earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in computer science. He also had a minor in mathematics. He founded a videogame development club at the university and was an intern at Firaxix Games, the Post reported.
He was a member of the Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society for Electrical and Computer Engineering, Fox News reported.
A classmate from Penn called Mangione a “totally normal guy,” CNN reported.
He was a head counselor at a summer program held at Stanford University in 2019, leading a class on Artificial Intelligence, organizing volleyball games and other activities for the counselors, the Post reported.
Luigi Mangione worked as a software engineer for TrueCar, in Santa Monica, California, starting in November 2020. He left the company in 2023, Fox Business reported.
His last known address was in Honolulu, Hawaii, officials said, according to ABC News. He moved there around two years ago, but left the second half of this year, Hawaii News Now said. He lived in a Century Square condo in Honolulu in a co-working and co-living space, Fox News reported. It is called Surfbreak.
“Surfbreak HNL is the first co-living and co-working penthouse for remote workers in Hawaii,” the company said of the space. “Our 40th floor floor-to-ceiling glass space offers panoramic views.... From city life to surf sesh and mountain heights. Stays are from two months to a year.”
The founder of Surfbreak HNL, R.J. Martin, said Mangione had “chronic back pain” from a pinched nerve, the Honolulu Civil Beat reported.
The pain came from childhood, Josiah Ryan, Martin’s spokesperson, told The Associated Press.
He was arrested in November 2023 for trespassing in a Hawaii State Park. He pleaded no contest and paid a $100 fine.
After leaving Surfbreak, he lived in a rental in Kakaako, Hawaii News Now reported. A neighbor there said he saw him three months ago after not seeing him for a while. Chris Kwock said he asked Luigi Mangione where he had been for six months, and he responded that he was on the mainland, with “medical stuff.”
Also about six months ago a former classmate of Luigi Mangione’s from Gilman School said that his family was “inquiring about his whereabouts,” ABC News reported. His mother contacted the San Francisco Police Department on Nov. 18 to report him missing, The San Francisco Standard reported.
